November 2, 2006 MASTER GARDENERS PROGRAM Since initiation of the program in February of 1981, the Master Gardeners have spent more than 14,500 hours assisting their friends and neighbors with horticultural problems. Approximately 22,000 individuals have been helped by these dedicated volunteers. This year two Master Gardeners were awarded for their 25 years of service. They are Carol Knutson and Lorri Kringlie. The Master Gardeners are a group of volunteers who received 48 hours of basic horticultural training when they join the program and 12 hours of update training each year. This training is given by the Cass County Horticulturist and Extension Specialists from North Dakota State University. In return for this training, each of the Master Gardeners is asked to spend a certain amount of time helping others with their horticultural problems. These include home landscaping, lawn care, gardening, fruit growing and the various other facets of horticulture. If you have any questions concerning the the Master Gardener program, contact me at the Cass County Extension Office. My phone number is 241-5707, email address is Todd.Weinman@ndsu.edu and web page address is www.ext.nodak.edu/county/cass
